Visit the author page of Paula Neal Mooney on Amazon According to the Memphis Daily News, FedEx layoffs have hit today, Friday, April 3, 2009 -- and the FedEx layoffs have hit the Memphis location pretty hard.

The FedEx layoffs include 1,000 salaried professionals across the entire FedEx Corporation, and of those, 500 FedEx layoffs came from the Memphis area hub.

Since FedEx is such a large corporation, with 33,000 employees alone in the Memphis area before the FedEx layoffs occurred, the 500 represents a small yet significant portion of the work force.

Attributing the layoffs that FedEx said they thought they could avoid to shipments being down and calling the layoffs an indicator of the times, FedEx also said that the severance packages would be generous.
